Down to the last drop: Tips for better fuel economy

Book NowAbout us

Every driver wants to make the most out of every drop of fuel in their tanks.

You may think that getting a fuel efficient car would do the trick, but there’s more you can do to make sure you’re getting the best fuel economy possible.

Here are a few tips:

Keep calm and drive steady
Abrupt acceleration and braking actually consume more fuel so it is advised to anticipate when to hit those pedals. If you notice cars in front of you slowing down and hitting their brakes, then you should start to slow down too instead of stopping at the last second. You should also maintain a constant speed when driving because changing your speed often burns up more of that fuel. If you have cruise control, using it when on the highway will also help with fuel economy.

Keep it light
The heavier the load, the harder the engine has to work therefore consuming more fuel. So as much as possible, keep your vehicle lightweight. Remove unnecessary items in your car if you’re not using them including your roof cargo container. If you have to tow a trailer or caravan, using a higher octane fuel (like a premium fuel) will give you slightly better fuel economy while you are towing.

Pressure checks
Make sure your tyre pressure is always correct. If your tyres are underinflated, the rolling resistance of the tyres increases and creates some sort of drag that requires your engine to work more. And this means – yep, you guessed it right - more fuel is consumed.

Change your air filter
If your air filter is blocked by dirt, your engine has to work more. So make sure you change the air filter as recommended especially if you are prone to driving into areas with lots of dust and debris. Having it cleaned every service will also help.

Mind the cap
It’s pretty simple, but a lot of people tend to forget about their fuel cap. The fuel cap is your tank’s protection and over time, it can be damaged and air can get into your tank which makes your engine burn more fuel.

Get serviced regularly
One of the things you can do to make sure you get the best fuel economy is to have your car checked regularly. Each and every part of your car contributes to fuel efficiency so having proper maintenance and early detection of possible problems will keep your vehicle running smoothly.

If your car feels like it’s consuming more fuel than it has to, don’t hesitate to bring it to us to get it checked. Because remember, as simple as an ignored fuel cap can affect your economy so it’s better to get your vehicle thoroughly inspected.
